"We've Been Handed Another Severe Blow"
Supreme Court Upholds Effective Death Penalty Act

"We Haven't Been Up To Bat Yet"
Enclosed with this note from Stanley was a message that he titled "Living on Death Row Discouraged?"

As I was driving home from work one day, I stopped to watch a local Little League baseball game that was being played in a park near my home.

As I sat down behind the bench on the first baseline, I asked one of the boys what the score was. "We're behind 14-to-nothing," he answered with a big smile.

"Really," I said. "I have to say you don't look very discouraged."

"Discouraged?" the boy asked with a puzzled look on his face. "Why should we be discouraged? We haven't been up to bat yet."

I may be on death row, but I'm not discouraged, because we're up to bat right now, and we can't lose with the momentum and team we have!!!

I am writing concerning the Effective Death Penalty Act. I am saddened to say that the U.S. Supreme Court has handed all death row inmates another severe blow - by "upholding" the Effective Death Penalty Act.

We are all touched by this latest ruling and understand that these death penalty states are going to misuse it and take full advantage of it in their continued thirst for blood.

The only thing that could change this ruling is (1) for President Clinton (who has admitted that he didn't know the Effective Death Penalty Act would all but prevent prisoners from ever receiving relief in federal courts) to go back and have it corrected in Congress (Clinton is acting like he didn't know what he was signing); or (2) if Gore wins the election, he can replace an outgoing conservative Supreme Court justice with another liberal, which would swing the majority to 5-4 the other way.

Sincerely,
Stanley Howard #N71620
