Getting Through The Days

My name is Rigoberto Avila Jr. I’m 29 years old and currently here on Texas death row. I’m looking for a friend as a pen pal to help me get through the many boring and lonely days here.

A typical day here on death row begins with breakfast somewhere between 3 and 4 a.m. Then at 6 a.m., the officers begin to ask us one by one if we want to go to recreation, which is for only one hour. The other 23 hours, we stay locked down in our individual cells. The dayroom is about half the size of a basketball court, where recreation is done individually. There is also outside recreation twice a week in an area divided by bars and screened to accommodate an inmate on each side.

To make the day go by faster, I work out one or two hours and read a newspaper or book, which fortunately some of the other inmates share. I don’t feel it’s right that we can’t participate in a work program or have a TV, and we have to be shackled everywhere we go.

Thanks for your time and your help.
